Choosing the Right Visual
A visualization should make information easier to digest than rows of raw data. The best chart is determined by the structure of the data and the story the audience needs to understand.
Just because a data set can be visualized in a particular way does not mean that visualization is appropriate. Choose the visual that makes the intended comparison, pattern, relationship, distribution, or location easiest to see.
Part-to-whole
Use pie charts or treemaps when proportions of a whole are the main message.
Category comparison
Use bar or column charts to compare counts, percentages, or other values across categories.
Change over time
Use line graphs when trends across time intervals are the main focus.
Relationships
Use scatter plots for two variables and bubble charts when a third variable should control marker size.

Basic Visuals
Basic visuals communicate common patterns with familiar forms that most audiences can recognize quickly.
Compare the Visuals
Different charts can represent the same data, but they emphasize different questions.
Pie vs Bar
Pie: emphasizes proportion of a whole and works best with few slices. Bar: makes close category values easier to compare because lengths share a common scale.
Bar vs Column
Both show category values. Bars run horizontally; columns run vertically. Column charts are also useful for ordered periods such as months.
Scatter vs Bubble
Both show relationships between two variables. A bubble chart adds a third dimension through bubble size.
Dot vs Filled Map
Dot maps pinpoint locations and can encode magnitude with marker size. Filled maps shade geographic boundaries and emphasize areas.
Column vs Histogram
A column chart compares categories and normally has gaps. A histogram groups numerical values into bins to show frequency and typically has touching bars.
Single vs Stacked
A basic bar or column shows a high-level value. A stacked chart divides that value into components, adding another dimension inside each category.
Visualization Selection Workflow
Start with the question the visual must answer, then match the visual form to the data.
For geographic work, also confirm that location fields are complete and recognized as geographic data by the visualization software before mapping.

Heat Maps
Use color intensity or color scales to draw attention to high, low, or geographically concentrated values.
Infographics
Combine data, charts, imagery, and language into a visually appealing story designed for easy consumption.
Word Clouds
Represent text frequency with word size. Remove stop words when common words would obscure meaningful terms.
Use stacked charts for an extra dimension, combination charts to compare values against a trend, scatter/bubble charts for relationships, histograms for frequency distributions, waterfall charts for movement from a starting to ending position, and maps when geography is central to the question.
Too many pie slices can be difficult to compare. Dual-axis charts can imply relationships when scales are not directly comparable. Broad choropleth ranges can hide meaningful geographic differences. Mapping to highly specific locations can also introduce privacy concerns.
