Common Network Hardware

Networks are built using various connectivity devices that operate at different layers of the OSI model to segment traffic, connect segments, and route data efficiently.

// Exam Objectives Covered
  • Domain 2.0: Network Implementation
  • 2.3 Select and configure wireless devices
  • Domain 3.0: Network Operations
  • 3.4 Implement IPv4 and IPv6 network services
  • DHCP, DNS, NTP configurations
Hub & Repeater
Layer 1 devices. A hub is a multiport repeater that forwards signals to all ports, creating one large collision domain. Rarely used in modern networks.
Bridge & Switch
Layer 2 devices that use MAC addresses to filter and forward frames. Switches are multiport bridges that provide dedicated collision domains per port.
Router & Multilayer Switch
Layer 3 devices that use IP addresses to route packets between different networks. Routers break up broadcast domains by default.

Firewalls, IDS/IPS & WAPs

Security devices monitor and filter traffic to protect the network, while wireless access points provide connectivity to mobile clients.

Firewall
Filters network traffic based on configured rules. Creates a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) for public-facing servers. Can provide stateful packet inspection.
IDS vs. IPS
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) detect and alert on malicious activity. Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) sit inline and actively block threats in real-time.
Access Point & WLC
WAPs connect wireless clients to the wired network. A Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) centralizes management for multiple lightweight APs.
Load Balancer
Distributes incoming network traffic across multiple servers to ensure high availability and prevent overload. Uses a virtual IP (VIP) address.
Proxy Server
Intercepts and forwards requests from clients to servers. Provides caching, content filtering, and anonymity. Can be forward or reverse.
VPN Concentrator
A dedicated device that accepts multiple VPN connections from remote clients, providing secure encrypted access to the internal network.

DHCP, DNS & Content Control

Essential services automate IP address assignment, resolve hostnames to IP addresses, and shape traffic for optimized performance.

DHCP & Relay
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol automatically assigns IP addresses, subnet masks, gateways, and DNS info. Uses a DORA process (Discover, Offer, Request, Ack). A relay (IP Helper) forwards broadcasts across routers.
DNS
Domain Name System resolves FQDNs to IP addresses. Uses various records: A (IPv4), AAAA (IPv6), MX (Mail), CNAME (Alias), PTR (Reverse). Operates on port 53.
CSMA/CA vs. CSMA/CD
CSMA/CA (Collision Avoidance) is used in wireless networks, requiring acknowledgments. CSMA/CD (Collision Detection) is used in wired Ethernet, issuing jam signals upon collision.
Content Filter & Packet Shaper
Content filters scan and block specific data types or URLs. Packet shapers perform traffic shaping to prioritize or delay specific packets to optimize bandwidth.
