Physical Media & Cables

Even with the rise of wireless technologies, a solid physical media backbone is essential. Network communication relies heavily on three main types of cabling: Coaxial, Twisted-pair, and Fiber-optic.

Coaxial Cable
Contains a copper center conductor surrounded by a plastic jacket and a braided shield. Highly resistant to EMI and RFI. Modern uses include RG-6 for cable TV and broadband modems.
Twisted-Pair Cable
Consists of multiple insulated wires twisted together in pairs. Available as Shielded (STP) or Unshielded (UTP). Twisting minimizes crosstalk and outside interference. Categorized from Cat 1 to Cat 8.
Fiber-Optic Cable
Transmits digital signals using light impulses rather than electricity, making it completely immune to EMI and RFI. Comes in Single-Mode (SMF) for long distances and Multimode (MMF) for shorter runs.

Identifying Connectors

Different cable types require specific connectors to interface with networking hardware. Knowing the visual differences and use-cases is critical for the exam.

RJ-45
Used with UTP/STP cabling for Ethernet networks. Contains 8 pins (4 pairs). Used in T568A and T568B wiring standards.
RJ-11
Used primarily for telephone connections and DSL. Contains 4 pins (2 pairs). Smaller than an RJ-45 connector.
F-Type
Used with coaxial cable for cable TV (CATV) and broadband cable modems. Screws onto the interface to tighten.
BNC
Bayonet Neill-Concelman connector used with RG-58 coaxial (thinnet). Uses a twist and lock mechanism.
ST & SC
Fiber-optic connectors. ST uses a BNC-style bayonet lock. SC is a square connector with a push-on/pull-off mechanism.
LC & MPO
Small form factor (SFF) fiber connectors. LC looks like a mini RJ-45. MPO provides multiple fibers (12 or 24) in one connector.
SFP / SFP+
Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver. Hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into a switch port to support fiber or copper.
QSFP / QSFP28
Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable. Supports higher data rates, up to 4x28 Gbit/s (QSFP28) for 100 Gbit/s links.

EIA/TIA 568 Standards

Inside a UTP network cable, four pairs of wires are twisted together. Two primary standards dictate which color wire goes to which pin: T568A and T568B.

T568A Standard
  • Pin 1: White/Green
  • Pin 2: Green
  • Pin 3: White/Orange
  • Pin 4: Blue
  • Pin 5: White/Blue
  • Pin 6: Orange
  • Pin 7: White/Brown
  • Pin 8: Brown
T568B Standard
  • Pin 1: White/Orange
  • Pin 2: Orange
  • Pin 3: White/Green
  • Pin 4: Blue
  • Pin 5: White/Blue
  • Pin 6: Green
  • Pin 7: White/Brown
  • Pin 8: Brown
Straight-Through
T568A to T568A (or T568B to T568B). Used to connect dissimilar devices, like a host to a switch.
Crossover
T568A to T568B. Used to connect similar devices, like a switch to a switch or host to host.
Rolled / Rollover
Pins are completely reversed on opposite ends (1 to 8, 2 to 7, etc.). Used for console connections.

Installing Network Distributions

Enterprise networks rely on structured cabling systems and distribution frames to organize massive amounts of cable and connect internal networks to external WANs.

MDF & IDF
The Main Distribution Frame (MDF) is the primary wiring point and WAN termination. Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs) are located in telecom closets and connect back to the MDF.
66 & 110 Blocks
Punch-down blocks used to terminate wiring. 66 blocks are older and used for voice. 110 blocks are newer, used for data and voice, and can support up to 1 Gbps.
Demarc / Demarc Extension
The Demarcation point is where the service provider's responsibility ends and the customer's begins. The cabling from this point to the customer's equipment is the demarc extension.
Smart Jack
A network interface device (NID) owned by the provider. It has power, can be looped for testing, and provides code/protocol conversion.
