Troubleshoot Deployment Issues and Cost

Resource provisioning — whether a first-time deployment or part of a migration — may not always go smoothly, and provider offerings change over time. You may find yourself troubleshooting incompatibilities, misconfigurations, resource limits, and service availability, all while keeping deployments performant without over-allocating and wasting money.

Compatibility Problems

Deployment and migration problems often trace back to compatibility issues — one of the first areas to check is instance virtualization settings: platform, processor architecture, network, and optimization features. Click a problem to see what to check.

Resource Allocation Misconfiguration

Over- or under-utilized resources complicate the cloud environment, impact user experience, and may mean the organization is paying for capacity it isn't using. Pick a resource, then a state, to see what to check.

Instance Configuration and Performance Testing

VM instances are among the first components tested after a deployment or migration. Sizing — the compute, storage, and network resources available to the VM — is a common culprit, and it's tied to both performance and cost.

Service provider oversubscription — providers may offer more resources than infrastructure fully supports, betting that most organizations won't consume everything they request. If you suspect oversubscription: review performance monitoring and logs, compare against the SLA, contact provider support, request dedicated resources for essential services, or retain some services on-premises.

Permissions and Privilege Misconfiguration

Access is managed by assigning a security principal — a user or group — to a role: an identity with an associated collection of permissions and a scope of authority. Troubleshooting here means separating authorization problems (missing privileges) from authentication problems (identity verification).

Troubleshoot Services and Applications

Services and applications are what users interact with daily, and they must be reliable. After a deployment or migration you may see outdated component definitions, retired features, incompatibilities, regional gaps, or API throttling.

Potential solutions when applications were deployed without sufficient investigation or testing:

Update the software to the current version
Confirm applications are cloud-ready or cloud-compatible
Consider refactoring, rearchitecting, or replacing legacy applications

For hardware-oriented issues: pull the service back to supported on-premises hardware, migrate to supported hardware, investigate alternative virtualization, optimize hardware for the workload, or add load balancers / web application firewalls to support legacy applications.

Deprecation of Functionality

One reason resources or services stop being available: deprecation. Cloud services evolve quickly, and providers compete to offer the most current, secure, and performant capabilities.

Why functionality disappears

Services may be retired outright or combined with other offerings to keep a provider's catalog streamlined and cost-effective — worth checking before you assume a broken deployment is the problem.

Cloud Service Outages

Outages happen at various levels — local infrastructure, your organization's data center, regional, or the provider itself. You need to determine scope first, then how to mitigate similar impact in the future.

Regional Service Availability

Providers base data centers across the world, and each has its own capabilities and regional restrictions — not all cloud services are available in all regions.

Infrastructure availability
Power, Internet, property, and physical security are all data center requirements that may not be met in every region.
Geopolitical concerns
Some regions are restricted by local government requirements that limit which services are available to consumers.
